Am not fluent in Hebrew, but surprised at the responses received re meaning
of "tachlis"--because (fluent or not) I was also thrown by this heading.
Whatever its denotative meaning (I'll trust the accuracy of those who have
supplied), idiomatically/connotatively "tachlis" is commonly used--it
certainly is among friends and colleagues of mine over the years!--to mean,
not "task" but "substance" in the sense of "brass tacks." E.g.: "Let's get
down to tachlis," after you and someone (or a group) w/ some substantive
matters to discuss or work through have goofed off or gone through some
preliminary pleasantries/jokes/whatever for a bit. Am actually surprised if
it literally means "task" and such ... interesting how it's evolved.
