including *Fez, *Bottom Line, *Museum Mile & *[with Howie Leess!] Rochester
gigs, plus *radio, *TV and... return to the *Isle of Klezbos!
Sun, May 2: "Beyond the Pale" show on WBAI 99.5FM features excerpts from
MetroKlezmer's most recent gig at Tonic's Klezmer Sundays series [curated by
David Krakauer], airing between 11am-12noon. (WBAI-FM is an NYC-based
Pacifica station; this program produced by Jews For Racial & Economic
Justice.)
Tues, May 25: Fez double bill! Two bands bent on re-inventing tradition
with both irreverence and respect. At 9pm Metropolitan Klezmer finds
eclectic exuberance all along the trade routes of Yiddish music, featuring
fresh takes on lesser-known gems; and the wild ride begins at 8pm with
Rachelle Garniez leading the stellar Fortunate Few ensemble through her heady
mood-swinging mix of Urban Euro-Latin-Cabaret-Jazz tunes. Check out two
distinctive musical experiences for the price of one (just $12!) at FEZ under
Time Cafe, 308 Lafayette St @ Great Jones, NYC, 212/533-2680.
Tues, June 8: Museum Mile Festival at The Jewish Museum, Fifth Avenue at
92nd St. FREE & open to the public, 6-9pm. Outdoors or, in case of weather,
indoors at the Jewish Museum auditorium. 5th Avenue closed to traffic, all
museums free!
Thurs, June 10: Abe Lebewohl Park at St Mark's Church, lunchtime concert
featuring MetroKlezmer's all-female Isle of Klezbos project. The seven-piece
powerhouse ensemble returns from last summer's triumphant voyage to the
Michigan Womyn's Music Festival for their first NYC show this year, at this
FREE outdoor series (open to the public, rain or shine). 12:30-1:30pm, East
10th St at 2nd Avenue. Sponsored by the Third Street Music School
Settlement, with refreshments provided by the Second Avenue Deli.
Fri, June 18: Live on-air "Trans-Pacific Sound Paradise" program, WFMU
91.1FM; MetroKlezmer interview & performance (NYC/NJ: Rob Weisberg, show host
3-6pm)
Fri, June 25: The Bottom Line's "Required Listening" Series, co-sponsored by
WFUV 90.7FM. Two sets (4 acts per set!); 15 West 4th St, NYC 212/228-6300.
TV DEBUT (Europe): Final broadcast date pending for MetroKlezmer's
performance with interview appearance by clarinetist Steve Elson on ARD
German network's "Rhythms of New York," currently programmed to air in June.
With music from =Yiddish for Travelers= !! Also seen by viewers in
Switzerland, Holland, etc.
FALL PREVIEW... Sat, Oct 23 (8pm) & Sun, Oct 24 (2pm): JCC Rochester
presents Metropolitan Klezmer in concert with special guest appearances by
classic klezmer clarinet/saxophone artist Howie Leess, original member of the
Greater Metropolitan Klezmer Band; Klezmer Plus! recording artist; and
veteran player with the fabulous Epstein Brothers, as featured in the recent
music documentary "A Tickle in the Heart"! Jewish Community Center, 1200
