Intensive Klezmer Workshop
July 12 - 17, New England Conservatory, Boston
A rare opportunity to learn little-known European klezmer repertoire from
master musicians. We will also explore the roots, history, and revival of
klezmer music along with modal, improvisational, and arranging concepts.
Faculty
German Goldenshteyn (clarinet) Originally from Notek (Atachi), Moldova, Mr.
Goldenshteyn has worked as a professional Jewish and Moldavian/Ukrainian
wedding musician since the 1950s, and has compiled a notebook of close to
600
tunes. He emigrated to the US in 1994, and currently resides in Brooklyn,
New York.
Yosef Kagansky (accordion) Bessarabian born accordionist Yosef Kagansky
emanates from a long ancestral line of klezmorim. After leaving Moldova in
1990 for Havana, Cuba, Mr. Kagansky settled in Toronto, Canada, where he
continues to perform at Jewish functions with his musical partner,
clarinetist Faik Akhmedov.
Michael Alpert (violin, vocals, dance, translator, lecturer)
A pioneering figure in the klezmer renaissance, Mr. Alpert is
internationally
known for his performances with Brave Old World, Kapelye, and other
ensembles. He was musical director of the PBS Great Performances special,
Itzhak Perlman: In The Fiddler's House.
Hankus Netsky (coordinator, lecturer) Multi-instrumentalist and composer
Hankus Netsky is the founder and director of the Klezmer Conservatory Band.
He is an instructor at the New England Conservatory of Music and a Ph.D.
candidate at Wesleyan University.
Now in its sixth year, the New England Conservatory Summer
Intercultural Institute offers an intensive immersion experience emphasizing
oral learning through close contact with master performers and scholars,
integration of performance with cultural study and an open environment of
cross-cultural inquiry. This summer the Institute will also offer classes
in
African, Caribbean, Turkish, and Indian Music.
Although the classes are demanding, no prior experience with klezmer
repertoire is expected or required. Participants from all backgrounds,
musical and non-musical, are welcome. Housing is available in dormitories
in
Boston's Back Bay, less than a ten minute walk from New England
Conservatory.
Tuition: $580 (College Music Society Members, $500)
A limited number of partial scholarships is available
