Re: Zhankoye

Hi,

YIVO Institute's photo archives (which will re-open to the public this spring)
include collections of pictures from various Soviet Jewish collective farms,
including IKOR and others in Crimea.

Also, "Jews on the Land," a silent 1926 documentary film from the USSR dealing
with Jewish farmers in Crimea, was just presented at the NY Jewish Film
Festival (on a double bill with a Birobaidzhan feature, "Seekers of
Happiness," USSR/1936). Incidentally, it has some noticeable Jewish humor
interwoven with the Communist lines; directed by Abram Room, it was co-written
by Viktor Shklovsky & Mayakovsky, and includes a quasi-compulsory Jews-
herding-swine sequence, as "Seekers" does also. For more on these films, see
J. Hoberman's new book, =The Red Atlantis=, and his =Bridge of Light: Yiddish
Film Between Two Worlds=.
