KLEZMERITIS - FREE MELBOURNE FESTIVAL CONCERT (SOUNDS AT SOUTHGATE)

Ernie Gruner's klezmer band "Klezmeritis" will play at the Southgate stage
for the Melbourne Festival this Saturday October 24th from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

Klezmer is the infectious traditional dance and celebration music of the
Jews of Eastern Europe. The music draws on Jewish musical roots but also
the music from whereever the Jewish folk musicians played or whoever they
played with, including Gypsy, Hungarian, Moldavian, Ukrainian, Greek and
Turkish elements. Klezmeritis has played in Melbourne and Sydney for
several years for Jewish community functions such as weddings and
barmitzvahs, as well as community and arts festivals and concerts.

Ernie Gruner has recently returned from 3 months studying klezmer overseas
including VIOLIN lessons in New York with Alicia Svigals - the world's
leading traditional player and teacher (as well as a member of the
internationally touring Klezmatics doing klezmer-jazz-rock fusion). Ernie
also attended festivals in Cracow and San Fransisco as well as concerts and
sessions in Budapest and Berlin. 

Ilya Lin on CLARINET trained in a classical virtuoso style at the Moscow
Conservatorium while listening to Russian folk music and the occasional
sounds of illegal Jewish music.

David Breytman on BAYAN - ACCORDION learnt his art in the Ukraine and is
usually heard with Klezmania and Sadko. He is kindly filling in for our
accordionist Phil Carroll who is visiting Turkey and Egypt playing
middle-eastern music - which has many elements in common with klezmer.

Ron Hansen on acoustic DOUBLE-BASS has played Hungarian music as well as
being a leading jazz and classical player.
