Jewish music transformed into Russian music

Paul Gifford wrote:

Was other
klezmer music recorded in the Soviet Union in the
postwar period,
perhaps under a different category, such as this?

Bob Micznik answers:

Yes. There was an interesting discussion about this on a show entitled
"Klezmer:
fiddler on the roof", that was shown on PBS a few years back . Gregori
Schechter
tells about a very popular Jewish musician and composer, Leonid
Utossov (from
Odessa), who would reinvent popular Jewish songs as Russian songs. The
example
given was Rebbe Elimelich transformed into a Russian "Uncle Alef".

Not to take issue with Paul, but this does not just include klezmer
music but Jewish
music of all types: Bund songs, show tunes, lulabies, work songs.
Klezmer music
represents only a part of the heritage of eastern european Jewish
music. Was it
Dave Tarra who said: "At home, we just called it all Jewish music".

Best wishes, Bob
