Jews Poland Ousted In '68 Invited Back
By REUTERS
[W]ARSAW -- The President's office in Poland said
Monday that it would take steps to restore
citizenship to Jews forced to emigrate during an
anti-Semitic campaign begun in March 1968 by the
Communist authorities.
"I declare that all those who left Poland due to
the March events can be assured that, once their
applications arrive, the President's office will
take all steps to grant them Polish citizenship,"
the office director, Danuta Huebner, wrote in a
statement published in the newspaper
Rzeczpospolita.
The "anti-Zionist" aspect of a much wider 1968
Communist assault on dissident intellectuals and
students drove 12,000 to 20,000 Jews or people of
Jewish origin to leave the country.
They scattered around the world and only a few
hundred have since returned.
It is unclear how many may want to apply for
Polish papers, although presidential aides said
Monday that more than a dozen applications had
been received, the P.A.P. news agency said.
Last week President Aleksander Kwasniewski called
it a shameful page in Polish history.
