The word "robot" was created by the Czech playwrite Karel
Capek (1890-1930) for his 1920 play "R.U.R." (an acronym for
"Rossum's Universal Robots"). The word was based on the Slavic
root for "work," which is cognate to Yiddish _arbet_, German
_Arbeit_, etc.
