[HANASHIR:4682] Re: cantor and choir director HELP

These last High Holy Days were my first as Cantor, and I directed the choir
as well (as did the previous Cantor here). I serve a small Conservative shul
with a tradition of 'big' choral music. I was worried that it would be
overwhelming, but it wasn't. There were even some advantages, as I was able
to make nuanced changes from what we had rehearsed which I could not have
done had there been a choir director. And, having been in 'the choir' for
almost 25 years professionally, I believe having a Cantor who has the skills
of a conductor (whether conducting or not) makes it much easier all the way
around. That the choir included a professional quartet helped a lot. The
physical situation was ideal as well -- the accompanist was directly in front
of where I usually stand at the amud and the choir was to my right, facing
me. There were difficulties, of course, such as when I was facing the aron,
or when I was falling korim, but the accompanist and choir were able to get
through those spots just fine without me. So, it can work.
