Our choir wears those white robes..since we only sing at high holidays,
that's the only time we wear them. But I can tell you how they make me (and,
I think, the other choir members) feel! Pretty special, and in the mood for
singing. When people see us in our robes outside the sanctuary, we are
easily identified as being in the choir. At the same time, we all become a
unified group, and it's sort of fun, putting on our robes in the youth lounge
before the services and even joking about how silly we look. And also, we
don't have to worry about what to wear to services! In my opinion, it just
kind of adds something, and it looks like a kittel, the white robe worn by
some rabbis/cantors at high holidays. Since most church choirs don't sing
the Shema and Bar'chu and Oseh Shalom (etc. etc.) I don't think the robes are
"churchy" at all. Just my humble opinion!
