We always sing either one or the other - from time immemorial, on the advice
of a visiting rabbi who pointed out that they're intended to be an option.

However there have been occasion when both are sung. I prefer to do them
separately because the melodies we use mostly are quite different in style
and intention, and it sounds messy if we try to do them one after the other.
