[HANASHIR:2865] FW: AFM Local 1000

Friends -
This is for those of you who have been interested in instrument insurance,
and who may also be interested in a way of getting health coverage,
something which many freelance musicians dont' have access to, or can't
afford . My friend Ray Korona, an attorney and musician in the New York
City area, was active in helping to start the AFM's Local 1000, a union for
folkies and other musicians who wanted to join the union but did not fit
into the typical union musician framework. He and John McCutcheon, along
with Charlie King and others --- all active in the U.S. folk music scene,
and all involved in supporting the labor movement --- worked with the AFM to
develop this "alternative" local.

I have been in touch with Ray and am forwarding his message. Those of you
who are interested in more information can check out the Local 1000 website,
or contact Ray directly. When I am in NYC next week, if I have time I may
check in with their office. Just wanted to pass this on...

Laura-

You wanted details for yourself and several other musicians interested
in joining Local 1000.

Local 1000 was recognized as a non-geographic local by the American
Federation of Musicians of the AFL-CIO. It is intended for traveling
musicians who are frequently in areas under the jurisdiction of locals
other than the one where they live. Because it's our local, we can
develop specific policies that support our work and help us to be more
successful, more prosperous and more secure.

For example, we have various alternative pay scales that give us a fair
fee, access to health care and a pension, an excellent instrument
insurance program, all kinds of help on the road, benefits from the
AFM's trust fund for certain performances and recording projects, our
own newletter and one distributed by the national organization--both
full of tips and practical advice, etc. Also, you'll be happy to know
that the dues structure was set up with the income of traveling
musicians like us in mind. The dues take only a very modest amount of
your money and they help make the union benefits possible.

The best place to get answers to specific questions and lots more
details is our office in NYC. You may know John O'Connor, an officer of
the Local who you can reach there: 212-245-4802 xt 145; 322 W 48th 3rd
flr, NY NY 10036. You could also check out the web site:
http://www.local1000.com/

I'll fax you an application form tomorrow as per your directions. I'm
also sending a copy of this email to John O'Connor by way of an
introduction and to John McCutcheon, our president.

Hope you and your friends "Come on down and join the Union!"

                                                        Ray
