One of the units that kids enjoyed that I did when i was still teaching
classroom music was to pick apart fiddler on the roof. I had an outline of
the plot and discussed jewish traditions with them, as well as life in the
shtetle. (mentioning that these are not the only traditions that Jews have).
I also gathered recordings of other songs in Yiddish and ladino for the
upper grades to listen to. Didn't do any worksheets, but you could develop
some, and the last few sessions showed selected and editied out portions of
the movie in chronological sequence- the shabbat scene, the wedding scene,
the scene at the railroad station, and of course, matchmaker, etc. THe
students were very attentive to this unit. unfortunaltely, the complete
lesson plans are in a random box in the attic of my garage, but you probably
get the jist. I did it with all grades, just on different intellectual
levels in discussions, with different concepts for each grade. It took about
4 weeks to do the whole thing.
