Avoid the San Francisco Bay Area, then, because both Oakland and San Francisco
airports have those things. As far as I can tell, it's not restricted to any
particular airline. I've noticed them when flying Southworst and United, but
it's been a long time (except on transatlantic flights) since I've been able to
carry my guitar on board.
Before those damn "hoods" got installed, though, I was at least able to get the
thing to the gate, and have it hand-carried into the hold, with a "CLAIM AT
GATE" tag on it so it would be waiting for me at the gate rather than at
baggage claim. This avoided a *lot* of potential baggage-handling damage. But
even that option's now been destroyed since they won't let you take it through
security.
