[HANASHIR:2765] Re: HANASHIR digest 516

In my experience as frequent with-guitar traveller, the best way to keep a
guitar safe is to get a good case. My recommendation, though I don't know if
they are available outside the West Coast, would be something like SKB,
which are typically designed for certain brands, and therefore hold guitars
much more snugly and some other cases.

If you can't get a good case, make sure your guitar is held firmly in
whatever case you have. Use towels, t-shirts, underwear, whatever you can
find, to keep it from moving around in the case.

As far as detuning strings, I have heard at least 10 different stories as to
why you should or you shouldn't. My personal practice: I detune them only
slightly, just to take a little edge off the tension that is placed on the
neck without letting it go so slack that my neck could get warped.

Finally, get to the airport (presuming you are flying) _very_ early and get
that thing into the cabin. One way to make this easier on yourself is to get
seat assignments near the back of the plane. While some people really don't
like being back there, airlines almost always board from the back of the
plane to the front, and if you board early, you have a much better chance of
getting your guitar onto the plane. If they don't let you carry it on, make
sure you have them "gate check" it. If you do a gate check, it will go into
a special compartment, separate from the majority of the cargo, and instead
of going through the airport's baggage handling system (where I would assume
most of the damage occurs...not during flight), they will bring it to the
bottom of the Jetway for you to pick up.

Hope that's helpful. If you have any more questions, feel free to e-mail me.
