Another helpful hint that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't is to get 
there early, speak with the gate agent and ask about pre-boarding.  Most 
agent (and alternatively, their supervisors) realize the cost and care of a 
guitar and will let you on early enough to check it in.  A good sentence to 
use is "This is the one possession I own that costs more than the plane 
ticket on your airline."  It's worked.

Also, DC-10's are very difficult to fit guitars above.  If that is the case, 
check the guitar at the gate and ask that it be handled with great care and 
returned to you immediately after arrival.  Or ask that the guitar be allowed 
to fly first class--there will likely be extra storage space there.

If you are going to loosen the strings, you may as well remove them and start 
anew--they'll bust anyway when you try and re-tighten them (geared toward 
thesmall strngs on twelvers).
