Yeah Brian, I'm in agreement with you. I can't sing about Jesus in any way
shape or form, much too much baggage associated with that particular concept.
However, the music does raise my spirit in a big way, and it seems possible to
use some of what makes it so captivating. Musically it's about groove, lots
of repitition, funky chords, strong harmony, heavy on the bass and keyboards,
clapping on the offbeat (very important, that). It would be nice to have a
new word for that sound, especially since the term "gospel" has the undeniable
association with Christian doctrine.
I don't really have the answer to this problem, but I'm convinced that this
particular groove has a place in our davenning as well. (at least in mine)
