The melody we sing as "Sulzer's Shema" does not appear in his three volume
Schir Zion masterwork. Has anyone ever seen a copy of it from the 19th
century or soon thereafter? I have never seen it and perhaps it does not
even exist, leading me to wonder whether Sulzer himself wrote the actual
melody we sing. It appeared in the 1930's in the first Union Hymnal edited
by A.W. Binder credited to Sulzer. The first four notes are taken from his
Ki Mitzion and the ending from the Shema he wrote for the Schir Tzion Torah
service. If anyone has a copy of the real thing please let me know in
order to dispel my doubts.
