Jeff - thanks for enlightening me (love your ending quote about who's right)
-  having recently moved to Dallas I was surprised to hear everyone singing
the melody you attribute to Sharlin and having only heard the "easier" one,
assumed that they had made it up locally and was ready to find a way to
correct them!  glad I didn't!   It's nice to find out who wrote it and the
whole history of the melody.  
Personally, I don't like using it because of the repetition of the hamevorach
part, but it IS a catchy melody, everyone here knows it and the ya la la part
serves as a nice niggun.  I use it as part of a medley of simple shabbat
melodies I do with a tot shabbat service.
