Nadav and Avihu were Aaron's oldest sons, and therefore the highest in the
priestly hierarchy. They were discussed a few weekly Torah portions ago. On
the day the tabernacle --- the portable Temple -- was dedicated in the desert,
Nadav and Avihu got overly zealous and brought an improper offering or
sacrifice into the place.
They thought they were doing the right thing, but evidently they did not do it
with the right intent. A fire came out of heaven and consumed them from
within, leaving only the shells of their bodies (according to the Midrash).
Pretty good lesson for the rest of the Israelites, huh?
