dear Brian...
my understanding with music played in public places (ie. restaurants etc) is
that
it indeed must be purchased...you cannot set up your stereo (well, you can but
legally you cannot) and play your CD's....
so the songwriters etc are most definitely being compensated.
speaking of compensation...
I have a pet peeve about the library system in the US...writers receive zero
compensation even if a book of theirs is checked out hundreds and hundreds of
times...in Canada (my "old country") libraries are spot checked regularly and
authors receive royalty checks based on a random sampling of checkouts of their
titles...
for this reason...I buy books instead of taking them out of the library.
