piano & songleading

As an amateur piano player/accompanist for our synagogue's cantor, I was
curious if there were many successful piano-playing song leaders on our
list.  The model for songleading seems to be a guitarist -- for pianists, is
there an optimal number of students?  How does one position oneself?
(Students sit to the right or left?)  I was thinking about being more than
just accompanist (i.e. go solo), and wondered if it was practical.
