Dina,
Martin, Taylor, they're both excellent brands. You're unlikely to go wrong
with either, or with another equally good brand.
Important questions are:
What size guitar do you want? A dreadnought or jumbo, all else equal, will
have a boomier sound, but is it comfortable, and will you be able to fly
with it?
Do you want a pickup? If so, you can buy one built-in or have one installed.
Are you interested in its resale value should you decide to trade up
later? Some of the newer Martin models are built with composite backs and
sides and will not resell for as much. On the other hand, if you get a D28
or such, you can always get good $$ for it.
And, for songleading, you want a fairly loud guitar.
Is it gonna be THE ONE that you will always keep, or do you just need a
real nice guitar?
I personally would not buy a new acoustic guitar, as I prefer to find one
which already has its sound. Besides, I think it's more fun to find a nice
used-guitar shop, play every decent one in the shop, and get the one that
sings to me.
Good luck,
Andy
