[HANASHIR:16499] RE: Sixth Graders Sing?

When I taught this age group a few years ago I drew on my Orff training by
bringing rhythm instruments such as bongo drums, claves, maracas, rain
sticks, etc. and even bringing keyed instruments such as metallophones or
xylophones for which I would devise an ostinato. Needless to say I avoided
any instruments that looked like they came from a Kindergarten class. I'd
say that I had to know that they knew the song before they could start
accompanying, so would look around and find someone who was singing out.
Eventually they all had a turn. That being said, it was always a challenge.
