[HANASHIR:16445] music books in the pews

Please forgive me if I bring up a question that was discussed recently. The
chair of our Ritual/Choir Committee recently visited a congregation that had
music books in the and she suggested that we do the same. I love the idea,
but see some possible problems. If we put Gates of Song in the pews it
would limit us to the music that is in that publication. I often sing
melodies from outside that book, although it continues to be a very helpful
resource. If we put together our own songbook, even for congregational use,
I would think that we have some copyright issues. Can anyone enlighten me?
Thanks,
