At HN'00, when we got to the Misheberach, Debbie asked us not to sing, that 
she would sing to us.  It was a beautiful and touching moment and really 
made me feel blessed.  Maybe something like that (a brief preface) might 
accomplish your goal.  Perhaps people just need their expectations set....
