I admire the work that all of us do, and I encourage all efforts in service
to Judaism and Jewish music. Nevertheless, when it comes to the names and
recordings that I include on the various lists on the Hava Nashira website,
it's not an entirely wide-open process.

I am requesting, please, that folks don't "self-submit" for inclusion
(unless you are a clearly established artist that I somehow mistakenly
omitted and will hit my head and go "duh, sorry.")

As a general rule of thumb, I wait until an artist's name or recording gets
mentioned to me by colleagues whose opinions I trust, or until I have
personally heard the artist, their recording, or have seen them perform.

Some of the sites linked to and recommended by the Hava Nashira site have
more open submission policies. I'm all for encouraging anyone who wants to
create and share Jewish music, and urge them to utilize the resources
available (like HotShabbat.com, TotShabbat.com, CD Baby, etc.) to get heard
and seen. Recommending them or their music to others is another matter.

As always, on the hanashir list, we allow and encourage shameless acts of
self-promotion so long as they are limited to one shameless promotion per
new product, and aren't very frequent.
