Coming from a family in which almost everyone plays guitars
professionally; classical, steel string, electric, you name it...I'd have to
say steel
string is the way to go with a kid who wants to play pop/rock/folk... etc.
Classical guitars are very hard for kids to play, partly because of the
wider neck and partly because they are simply harder to play, since you do
mostly
finger-picking. My brother, who is 14, plays classical and loves it, but it's
definitely not for everyone.
And finally, the most important reason for choosing acoustic/steel
string would definitely be price. You can get a decent acoustic for $300 to
$400
dollars but a decent classical will run you $600+. Washburn makes some very
decent, inexpensive models, so do Taylor, Alvarez and Ovation. For my money I'd
go
for Jean Paul Larrivee's introductory level parlor guitar, it's a bit pricey
(729.99) but you can probably find a used one at around $450. It's got a solid
top, it's handmade and Larrivee's guitars tend to have an exquisite sound.
Good luck.
