If this child is only 5 or 6 that's really young for any instrument.
Does the kids know his/her right from left? I would strongly suggest
piano. It's an amazing instrument for eye/hand/brain coordination,
it's also most important to see if the kid is focused enough to be able
to practice every day and commit to learning any instrument. If they
don't have a piano, they can buy a keyboard which is a very minimal
financial outlay. But learning piano is wonderful for learning how to
read notes, learning theory, which will make this child a step ahead
when he/she gets into a regular school music program and which will lay
a solid foundation for future instruction on any instrument (especially
since you learn treble AND bass clef). Piano gets my vote.

Friends -- I need a little instrument advice. 5-6 year old child, wants
to
learn an instrument. Actually wants to learn piano, guitar, violin and
drums (which mom ruled out immediately). Before they go buy rent
piano/keyboard, I needed a little help in terms of which instrument is
most
advisable to begin with. I think piano is versitile, but the kid has
songleaders in his family and might find guitar more useful in that
regard.
Is 6 to early to start guitar? Or violin? I am not so knowledgable in
this
area and would love some advice I can pass on to mom!
Thanks
