[HANASHIR:12549] Re: prof/volunteer choirs

I have been on all sides of this, having hired such
quartets, been in hired quartets, and been in choirs
which have hired quartets. The pitfalls are the
possible impacts on the choir, and the unfulfilled
expectations you might have. Make sure to hire choir
singers, not soloists (or, rather, soloists who are
good musicians and can blend). Recognize you will
change the sound and possibly the balance (you
probably want that). As good as professional musicians
might be, they won't do everything for you and they
will make mistakes. If they don't rehearse with the
choir, or rehearse perhaps once or twice, they might
miss some points that the regular choir members won't.

Perhaps my biggest concern is the impact on the other
choir members. Some choir members may have a problem
with hired members, since the object of the choir
might have been more spiritual than musical. After a
few experiences with this, I decided to refrain from
hiring additional singers, regardless of the
circumstance (and, clearly, this can be both
uncomfortable and embarrassing). The positive side is
that the choir becomes a cohesive group, responsible
for the music it makes. Beyond attitudes and feelings,
hired singers often (unconsciously) cause the regular
singers to relax and take less responsibility for the
music. In the end, you get less out of your choir.
