Lori, you may have the Kol Nidre ritual confused with the "Hin'ni", which
has the chazan entering the sanctuary from the back, praying as he walks to
the bima that G-d accept his prayers on behalf of the kahal. I have never
heard of Kol Nidre taking place anywhere but on the bima.
With regard to microphones - Shure SM58 and AKG C1000S: The SM58 is
considered the standard of the industry for live vocals. There are better
microphones for more $$$, but it's questionable that the quality difference
is worth the money difference in live situations.
The AKG C1000S shines in situations where you need to pick up the sound
from a greater distance - it's an electret condensor, with greater
sensitivity, needing phantom power or a 9V battery. It's not a great
choice for vocalists who like to crowd the mic, as it will distort under
that condition. A well-positioned C1000 will adequately pick up your
guitar and your voice, perhaps eliminating the need to use your guitar's
pickup.
