Here are some more -
1. One thing to check is the congregation's favorite tempos. I've songled
for congregations who prefer Kol B'seder's "Shalom Rav" to be very up-tempo
and others who sing Debbie Friedman's "Oseh Shalom" like a funeral dirge.
2. Skipped verses - e.g., sing all three verses of (Kol B'seder's version
of) Mah Tovu, or just the 1st and 3rd? Similar issue with "L'cha Dodi".
3. Repeats, e.g., how many times do they sing the chorus of Rothblum's
"V'shamru", once or twice?
4. Special intros and endings. Exactly how *does* Richard Silverman's "Tree
of Life" end anyway???
5. Key - depends on whether a cantor, rabbi, or kids are singing with you.
6. Check whether they sing "standard" or "alternative" melody lines, such as
the line listing the imahot in the "Avot v'Imahot", the "borei p'ri hagafen"
line in the Kiddush, and the last line of the "Aleinu". These options are
included in the Complete Shireinu.
