[HANASHIR:10336] Klezmatics in Vienna - Review

Last Saturday (November 17th) the Klezmatics gave a performance in Vienna,
Austria. They played at the "Musikhaus" which is usually reserved for
classical music and seldom for gread Jazzists. From what I have heard they
originally should have performed in one of the small halls, but the demand
was so big, that they were moved to the "Grosse Halle" (=big hall). The hall
was almost full, and I had the impression that most of the people in the
audience were not Jewish. It actually surprized me that there was such an
interest, where as the PR before the concert was poor. Anyway the Klezmatics
gave a great concert, especially at the second half which was so good, that
they actually had to give three (!) encores!
This was especially touching, as we are talking of Vienna, Austria, which
tends to be seen as extremely antisemitic in the Jewish world. As a Jew who
lives in Vienna for 14 years now, I -know- that Austria is not more or less
anitsemitic than any other European country (maybe with the ecception of
England), and I was really glad to see the proof for it through an American
modern Klezmer band.

I do hope more musicians would take the example from the Klezmatics and
"dare" to come to Vienna, and the the Klezmatics would come here again :-)
I would like to thank them for a wonderful performance!!
Hadass
