Ln Lerner asked:
...Oct. 5 for Shabbat ... Because it is Sukkot, is there anything special or
different I need to include? (using the Blue Gates of Prayer.)
The answer is "yes," because Oct 5 is one of the intermediate days of
Sukkot.
1. The melody for Mi Chamocha is traditionally changed to a Sukkot
melody (you can find one that works well in Zamru Lo, Vol 3, page 4 or you
can just use the same basic "hodu Ladonai Ki Tov" melody you use when you're
shaking the Lulav & Etrog).
2. Add Ya-a-le v'ya-a-vo with the appropriate Sukkot language. In
service No. 1, for example, you'll find this at page 137 (Our God and God of
all ages, be mindful of your people Israel on this (day of Sukkot) and renew
in us....)
3. Add a short Hallel (longer Hallel is usually reserved for Sat.
morning) after the silent meditation is concluded (e.g. from Service 1, the
silent meditation ends on p 141. Then would come the reading on page 389,
and Hallel would begin on page 525.
You say or sing the blessing for Hallel at the top of that page (I like the
melody by Robert Solomon, it's in one of the Safam songbooks, but pick any
melody, or just say it) and then pick and choose three or four (or more)
Psalms you want to say/sing for the evening service. (Morning service
leaves out fewer, but seldom do ALL get included).
4. Lulav & Etrog are shaken. But be careful. This is very much local
custom. Many congregations do NOT do this on Shabbat. Ask and do not make
an assumption either way. And lastly,
5. If you are reading Torah, remember that there are special readings
for the intermediate days of Sukkot. (There are 2 readings: One is Ex
33:12 to 34:26 and the other is Num 29:17-31. And the Haftarah is Ezek
38:18 to 39:16.
The good news is that the Chatzi Kaddish, Sh'ma and Bar'chu melodies
that do change for the first, second and last days of Sukkot all revert to
the standard melodies for sevices during these intermediate days of Sukkot.
Chag Sameach.
