[HANASHIR:9156] RE: listserve note

I'm not sure I follow all your comments. The list software itself has
nothing to do with extraneous code or text. The code is the result of a
combination of someone sending a message or reply in non plain-text format
(as many people use email software that defaults to more enhanced modes) and
the ability or inability of your email user application to utilize the
special encoding.

The better email applications around offer people the option to send their
email in plain text format to specific addresses they indicate, or to set
their default output to plain text. But we live in a society that increasing
prefers html-style email with pretty fonts, color, backgrounds and more.

As list owner, I do encourage everyone to try and send to the list in
plain-text format only. I also encourage that people use relevant subject
lines, and change them as necessary, especially when replying to a digest
version

As for extraneous repeated text, that again is on the sender side. The list
can't control that. It's up to each list member to include or exclude
original text within replies. It is generally preferred to leave some of the
original text in a reply to give some context. But one can surely delete all
the unneeded parts of the reply-especially the "Shamash" message. The
Shamash List Processor will always tack that little "advertisement for
Shamash" on every message. List owners cannot control or stop that. And the
List Processor doesn't scan messages to see if that little advertisement is
already in there quoted from an earlier message. It's up to the sender to
delete it. And BTW, we pay nothing to Shamash to host this list. So that
little blurb is not much to ask for on Shamash's part.

Some lists are moderated. The list owner must approve every message. With
that comes the option for the list owner to trim down or edit some of the
message text if desired. This list quickly grew to big for me to handle
having to read and moderate every posting before it got posted. So whatever
anyone posts, that's what gets on the list. It's up to the subscribers to
control these things.

I would also disagree with your contention that this list has a higher level
of extraneous or repeated text. I belong to many, many lists, ands have been
a net and online service user for over a decade. Hanashir ranks pretty low
compared to many of the lists in terms of extraneous text, off-topic
messages, etc. The list is spam-free. So I appreciate the comments and
suggestions and agree with them, I felt it necessary to defend the honor the
this list!
