This song is one I learned without knowing it. I lived in Israel just
after it was written and it must have been an anthem for the Camp David
Accords... it became part of me as a child (age 11) though I can't remember
where or when I learned it.
Years later when I was 17 at Grinnell College in Iowa, David Broza came and
sang for us. I was one of 20 people in the audience. I was sitting in the
front row, and honestly I really didn't know who he was. His music was
familiar and stunning and beautiful. When he sang Yiheyeh Tov I suddenly
knew, this was the song I sang to myself whenever I was scared. This was
the song that took care of me in Israel when we slept in bomb shelters on
our Northern Kibbutz. This was the song that saw me through high school
and heartbreaks and exams and all the other fears that afflict teenagers.
This is my most fervent prayer for peace in Israel.
The funny thing is, that until today, I only understood it partly -- I
never saw a translation in English -- and the Hebrew was just beyond my reach.
Thanks for the translation..... and for the memory.
