[HANASHIR:7331] Re: Music Educators Institute (MEI)

One of the best songleaders I ever saw was a 20 year old college student who
had no music ed degree nor judaic degree. But boy did he know his stuff and
how to get kids involved. It was electric, wonderful and worked!

The reason for these problems is because songleaders are not certified,
licensed music educators who know the proper methodology of teaching
music. I
was in that position when I was a songleader and now that I am a
certified
teacher, I am horrified that anyone let me teach music or called me a
music
        teacher back then.

Sometimes synagogues are desparate. Which is why I got hired.

I got called just a few weeks before the school year -- they needed a
song-leader/teacher and they had no leads except that someone had told them
that I sang and play guitar.

"Well, yes," I said, "I do, and it sounds like fun, but I have absolutely
no teaching experience, and haven't even had anything to do with any
synagogue's religious school in almost 30 years."

    I got the job.

That was a few months ago. So, I've been listening on the list, reading and
listening to what I can, and hope to attend the MEI conference.
