[HANASHIR:7330] Re: Music Educators Institute (MEI)

Chevre,
There are two books that I have in my library. One is called Music
Curriculum for Jewish Religious Schools, published in 1967 by Cantor Joseph L.
Portnoy, then of Cong Emanu El in San Franciso. It is 76 pages, and includes
topics such as Music Experiences through singing, Music experiences through
Playing Instruments, Music Experiences through rythmic activities, through
listening and through creative activities. It goes through every age group from
Pre-K through Junior High. It speaks about the developmental characteristic of
each age group, lists music as well as activities that are age appropriate for
each group. It further has tons of pedagogic suggestions, etc. for the music
teacher. It is the most comprehensive book of its kind I have ever seen. Of
course, the music and songs don't include what's been happening in the 30 years
since its publication, but, it is the best publication of its kind I have ever
seen. I don't know if it is still in print. But, if it is not, I will be happy
to make a master copy and send it to whomever requests it.(Within reason)
There is also a book called Music for the Jewish School, a Song Curriculum
and Teaching guide. by Harry Coopersmith, published in 1975 by the Board of
Jewish Education in New York. It is only 27 pages, but is excellent in its
content as well.
I am sorry that we do not know about these kinds of resources and always
have
to reinvent the wheel as it were. I wish that other Jewish Music groups would
share their expertise so that we can educate ourselves and provide the best for
our various places of teaching and the young people whose lives we touch. Since
joining this listserve I have been so impressed with all of you Jewish souls who
want so much and do so much for our young people. I am proud to be part of
this
group.
I will be happy to share these two publications with you and may you go from
strength to strength in your incredible sounding project.
Marsha Fensin
