[HANASHIR:7277] Recommendations on tape recorders and computer programs to clean up noisy tapes

Hi to all of you,

Looking to upgrade the minimalist tape recorder that I have brought to
HN in the past. My tapes are too scratchy and hard to hear ... it seems
a shame to spend all that time and effort recording them, to then get
poor quality tapes.

I tried a handheld recorder also, it was so convenient but produced even
noisier tapes.

What do you recommend - brands, features, cost? What about the balance
between size and quality? I was looking at an ad for a machine intended
for dictation - would that likely be good for recording music as well?
What about digital recorders?

Also, I seem to recall a discussion a while ago about computer programs
that could clean up noisy tapes. What are some of these, how can they
be obtained, are they hard to use?

Thanks as always,

- Ros
