Ros,
I'll second Penny's recommendation of a portable minidisc recorder. I
use mine to do live recording, both of events like HN and of myself
practicing so I can hear how I sound. I also use it to record CDs I
borrow from the library. It works like a CD player in that you can skip
back and forth from track to track by pressing a button (no rewinding!).
One thing that's especially handy is that you can create your own track
marks within a song, so you can easily mark one part and then play it
back over and over again to your heart's content--great if you are
trying to learn music from a recording. The sound is really clear. Very
little background hiss.
It ain't cheap though: the player itself cost about $250 (though I've
seen them as low as about $180); the microphone is extra. I have a Sony
MZ-R55 (since discontinued, but I think there is a new, similar model).
The discs cost about $2 apiece, cheaper if you buy them in quantity.
They hold 74 minutes (same as a CD) and you can re-record on them an
infinite number of times.
