[HANASHIR:5957] Re: Tape Recording at Hava Nashira

Dear Judy,

While I had hoped to keep this kind of discussion off the list,
your note is forcing me to bring it up publicly. As the person who
made the recordings and the videotape you mentioned, I feel it is now my
responsibility to respond to accusations which it seems are at least in
part aimed at me.
        1. I made the Hava NaShira service recordings (at the request of
the HN organizers),
edited them down, and sent them to OSRUI *in early July, 1999* with
suggestions on how to
transfer them to reproduceable media. I am sure they were received (I
sent the tapes certified mail, and received written confirmation of
their receipt). I know nothing of
what happened to the tapes after that. I want to make it clear on this
score that I did everything I said I would do in the time frame I said I
would do it.
        2. As to the videotape of the masterclass session: That was
something I made as a *private* recording for research purposes, having
nothing to do with the Hava NaShira leadership. You needed to come to *me*
for a copy of that tape. I must be honest here that I remember making no
promise to copy and distribute the entire videotape to all the participants
in that session. The agreement at the start of the session was simply (and
clearly) to obtain permission to videotape--*not* to distribute it. I will
check this tape and see exactly what I said; however, at the most I recall
saying that I could send you your own segments of the videotape. Moreover,
if I did make the promise and forgot (an easy thing to do in the context of
the intense atmosphere there), why didn't you remind me after the conference
so I could do something about it?

As an academic, I want to make it clear on this list that I believe I
have held up my word to those who were at Hava NaShira. Ethics and the
ability to uphold them are of primary concern to me, especially because they
directly influence the usefulness and success of my research.
I write this back to the whole list because I was the most visible
person making recordings at last year's Hava NaShira. I want to make it
clear that to the best of my knowledge, I acted ethically and promptly.
Judy, your words have the potential to damage me and my reputation
unjustifiably--whether or not you intended to do this. I ask that you
please be more careful in posting your frustrations to the list.

Judah.
