[HANASHIR:4834] Training for Cantors

Chevre,
Having watched this discussion over the past several days, I noticed one
element which has not been touched upon: the legal ramifications of the
title. Each state has different requirements for clergy which allow
them to be agents of the state, particularly for marriage. Most of
these include either graduation from a recognized institution of
learning or certification by a recognized board.
While it is true that apprenticeship is one way to learn the material,
without proper legal standing a person compromises those who believe
themselves married by someone calling themselves cantor or, for that
matter, rabbi.
Yes, there are people who are fine shlichei tzibbur without formalized
institutional training. There are many who possess kavanah, fine
character and wonderful voices. Likewise those who are institutionally
trained may not measure up in those areas. However, this is not the
totality of the issue. Please keep this in mind as the discussion
continues.
