[HANASHIR:4810] Re: Guitar Advice

Karen,

I purchased a guitar for my young son who really just wanted to explore the
instrument but had a tough time getting his hands around my regular sized
classical guitar. I think as long as a guitar has good intonation and
reasonable tuning devices, size is the most important issue for a child. I
ordered a very serviceable, half-size guitar which keeps its tune from
Empire Music for about $65 (they have a web-site and primarily sell to
schools across North America). Even though he relates mostly to pop and
rock music, I chose nylon strings since I didn't want him to get discouraged
by stinging fingertips. My first guitar cost $35 second hand, and when I
was ready and could afford it, I purchased something better. So I am used
to the idea that a first guitar need not be first class, but should not be
discouraging in any way.
