Not to belabor a point  . . . 

I also agree that a very inexpensive guitar can be altogether
disappointing, especially if the student is really motivated.  A decent
instrument can always be sold at not too great a loss . . .

Also, I started at age 10 with a baritone ukulele, which must be about
the size of a 3/4  6-string.  It had a nice sound, but only the 4
highest strings!!  I was able to learn all the basic chords quickly, and
not have those annoying bass strings until I was ready!
