I have no standing to have an informed opinion, but remember that children
did not used to be fanatically protected - protection of children from
dangerous substances and machineries comes in kind of late to the
industrial revolution when the reformers get some power.
So yeah, I think it's beleiveable that young children would be playing
with a toxic substance at temperatures that would destroy flesh, in
the time and place of that song.
Clearly there are good reasons for such protection, especially against
industrial exploitation, but there's definatly something lost in the
prolonging of infancy. It's a good thing that kids know to go behind thier
parents backs and do things they aren't supposed to.
