Woody Guthrie once some it up: "I never heard a horse sing it"
Of course, it is kind of far-fetched to call all this modern singer-songwriter
stuff (of which I am a proud practitioner) "folk music". "Country" might be a
more accurate lable. Woody's songs, usually very contemporary-topical, were
usually song to melodies that his audience already knew (hymn tunes and
traditional folk songs).
