[From a press release from Rounder Records:]
Rounder announces new Chava Alberstein release
Daily life in Tel Aviv takes center stage in new Chava Alberstein CD "End of
the Holiday";
Israel's premier voice turns attention to foreign workers and environment in
new release;
Peace activist's 54th CD is first with husband, filmmaker Nadav Levitan
Set against the backdrop of relentless violence, the struggles, heartbreaks
and beauty of everyday life in Tel Aviv shine all the brighter in Chava
Alberstein's newest release "End of the Holiday". Released January 13, 2004
on Rounder Records, the CD is the 54th release for the Israeli legend. It
embraces all Chava's long-standing commitments: preserving Yiddish culture,
working for peace in the Middle East, and cataloging the human heart in
song. Her U.S. releases include a greatest hits, a CD with the Klezmatics
and 2001's "Foreign Letters."
For "End of the Holiday" Alberstein has crafted a collection of
heartbreaking miniatures reflecting life in modern Tel Aviv. Here foreign
workers may send money home but never send pictures, lest they upset their
loved ones. Here prostitutes stroll a country club beach just emptied of
Rosh Hoshanah celebrants. And here a newly orthodox girl returns with mixed
feelings to solicit donations from her old -- and still secular -- friends.
It is truly a portrait of a country at the end of a holiday, and the
reverberations with post-9/11 American life are palpable. The lyrics are by
Chava's husband, poet and filmmaker Nadav Levitan. This is Chava's first
collaboration with her husband, and it underscores that for her, as for many
others in troubled times, home and family are a primal defense against
despair.
A friend of slain Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, Chava Alberstein
implores audiences at her concerts to "make sure that the dream was not
murdered with the man." In "End of the Holiday" Chava Alberstein continues
to keep that dream alive in song.
