The Yiddish Studies Program at Columbia University Presents Three Concerts
October 20, November 10 and December 8, 2003
Curated by Deborah Strauss and Jeff Warschauer of the Strauss/Warschauer Duo,
this series is dedicated to presenting performances and lectures that reflect
the finest current research and creativity in the fields of klezmer music and
Yiddish song.
The 2003 series begins on October 20 with WAITING FOR THE NIGHTINGALE: A
concert of contemporary and traditional Yiddish songs performed in words and
music by preeminent musician, composer and scholar Michael Alpert in
collaboration
with the internationally acclaimed Strauss/Warschauer Duo.
MICHAEL ALPERT (vocals, accordion, guitar, violin) explores the new world of
Yiddish songs -- past, present and future -- with acclaimed klezmer musicians
DEBORAH STRAUSS (violin, accordion, vocals) and JEFF WARSCHAUER (guitar,
mandolin, vocals). In addition to rare gems of the older Yiddish folksong
repertoire, they will perform and discuss new compositions and text settings by
Alpert, Warschauer, Bella Gottesman, and Joshua Waletzky.
