PBS-TV program, Cantors: A Faith in Song

Check your local listings on Monday, September 22, for this television
program:

<< CANTORS: A FAITH IN SONG
In Jewish spiritual life, the cantor sings the prayers and liturgy of the
synagogue. He is a musical guide, healer, celebrant, and often, after
hours, an entertainer.

This concert, taped in September 2003 at the Portuguese Synagogue in
Amsterdam, Netherlands, features three of the world's most acclaimed Jewish
cantors: Naftali Hershtik, chief cantor of the Great Synagogue, Jerusalem
(shown); Benzion Miller, chief cantor at the Youth Israel Beth-El Synagogue
of Borough Park, in Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Alberto Mizrahi, cantor of the
Anshe Emet Synagogue of Chicago.

Backed by a 40-piece orchestra and 16-voice choir, the cantors sing Jewish
cantorial and secular music, from traditional chants to 19th-century
compositions and contemporary ballads. >>
