interesting new CD of Jewish and Irish music

Sept. 2, 2003

I am pleased to announce the release of the musical soundtrack CD for
?Shalom Ireland?, Valerie Lapin Ganley?s beautiful film portrait of the
Jewish community of Ireland. The film opened in May 2003 at the Toronto
Jewish Film Festival and in July 2003 at the San Francisco Jewish Film
Festival. It is currently slated for showings at Jewish Film Festivals in
Boston, Washington, DC, Miami, Palm Beach, Milwaukee, San Diego,
Australia, and on PBS and RTE.

The soundtrack consists of both traditional Jewish (mostly klezmer) and
traditional Irish music. It was done by a band called Ceilizemer (ceili,
Gaelic for Irish musical party; zemer, Hebrew for song), which was formed
expressly for the purpose of doing the film music. The arrangements are
quite acoustic and traditional, yet represent an effort to meld these two
incredible musical cultures.

Ceilizemer consists of the following musicians:

---Andy Rubin (clawhammer banjo and mandolin player from the
Sacramento, CA-based Freilachmakers Klezmer String Band)
---David Kidron (fiddle and tin whistle player, originally from the
Freilachmakers, now living back in New Zealand)
---Lewis Santer (bazouki / guitar / mandolin player from the Oakland,
CA-based Irish group Driving With Fergus)
---Vince Wolfe (uilleann piper / tin whistle player from Driving With Fergus)

We had additional help from:

---Julie Hochman (cello)
---La Rita Craft (accordion)
---Sean Feder (percussion)

The tune list for the CD is as follows:

1. Jig / Boy on the Mountain Top / The Boys of Portaferry
2. Naftule Shpilt far dem Rebn
3. Khosn Kale Mazltov
4. Poirt na bPucai / Cordal jig
5. Sadegurer Khosid
6. Hora Mit Tsibeles
7. Crooked Road to Dublin / The Virginia
8. Yom Shabbaton
9. Planxty Ginsberg
10. Hatikvah
11. Lament for Limerick
12. Dem Trisker Rebns Khosid
13. The Parting Glass
14. Hatikvah (reprise)

A photo of the album cover can be found on the Freilachmakers website
(www.freilachmakers.com) and on the Driving With Fergus website
(www.drivingwithfergus.com). The latter site also contains soundbites.

For a copy of this CD, send a check for $17.50 (i.e., $15 for the CD, $2.50
for shipping / handling), made out to me (Andrew Rubin). My home
address is 3839 Berrendo Dr. Sacramento, CA 95864.
